Improvement Scheme Update

There is a lot going on in the Park at the moment. Here is a quick update on four capital projects funded by the GLA and L.B. of Bromley

The Sphinxes

Work on the South Terrace Sphinxes and Anerley Gate terrace is moving ahead

Whilst working on the Sphinxes, the contractors discovered a time capsule! It appears to have been placed inside one of the sphinxes during the last major restoration in the 1970’s.

The final element of the work will be restoring the the Sphinxes to their original colour, a shade off terracotta. An example of the colour can be found on a temporary brick panel but by the contractors on the path to the museum.

The Dinosaurs

Work on ‘Iggy’ is complete and she looks magnificent! However, she does now rather show up the rest of her brothers and sisters

She also had her moment in limelight when the BBC One show featured her renovation, although she suffered the indignity of having Giles Brandreth poking around her nether regions. The next work likely to be undertaken is the draining of the lake around the Dinosaurs to enable a thorough inspection of the aquatic statues.

There are signs that there is a lot of urgent repair work needs to be done to the statues below water level

The Cafe

Work on the new Cafe is now scheduled to start early next year. Planning permission has been granted, the funding is in place and the design for the Cafe has won a prize at this years MIPIM exhibition in Cannes. It’s expected that the process to appoint a new cafe operator will also take place early in the new year.

The Skateboard Park

There is quite a buzz developing amongst the Skateboard (or wheeled sports) community about the new Skate park. The ground is being cleared in preparation for the construction work on the site, which is directly behind the football pitch at the NSC. The distinguishing feature of the new Skate Park will be the way in which it will be set in the existing contours of the land, rather than usual ‘ off the peg’ solution involving a slab of concrete. The new skate park is already being referred to as potentially on of the best in the country.
