Fairground at night on the Palace Terrace

Palace Terrace

Located on the hilltop overlooking the rest of the park, this site is highly significant as it was the location of for Paxton’s Crystal Palace and contains the remains of the former structures. The Palace itself moved to the site in 1854 from its original location in Hyde Park as part of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Palace burnt down in 1936.

The area is within close proximity to Upper Norwood town centre and currently used by Zippo’s Circus and George Irvine’s funfair in winter and spring.

The London Development Agency wants to encourage more events of all descriptions in the Park. The masterplan vision for the site proposes a much improved, serviced space for a far wider diversity of events such as farmer's markets.
