The Bowl

The Bowl, located in the northern corner of the park in the English landscape has a rich history of hosting outdoor music events including one of Bob Marley's last concerts in 1980 before he died in 1981.

Constructed in 1961 by the Greater London Council to reintroduce music back into the park after the loss of the Palace, the Bowl witnessed a host of legendary performances from the likes of Pink Floyd, Elton John, Joe Cocker and the Beach Boys to name a few.

The late 1990's saw the replacement of the original temporary stage with a new permanent concert platform designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, which was completed in 1997.

Current music events include the Bowl Festival and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which recently returned to the Park in August 2007 as part of Pops in the Park series.

The London Development Agency's masterplan does not propose any major changes to the bowl itself as it is very successful in its use as a parkland and event space, but does seek to encourage greater biodiversity and wildlife. A treetop walkway is proposed nearby to enhance visitor experiences of the woodland with the alignment taking in key trees and features such as the bowl to create a route of variety and interest.
