The Masterplan Vision

Transitional Landscape Zone Map and Perspective

The Transitional Landscape

The centre of the Park was originally a transitional zone linking the modern structure of the Crystal Palace itself and the prehistoric landscape of the lower Park. The vision for this area is to remove the car parking and re-model the landscape to reflect, interpret and reveal features of historical interest.

The whole area will be re-modelled to create an undulating landscape with clearly-defined slopes and terracing, reminiscent of rice terraces. The levels would be determined by fixing points of existing remains, Park elements and connections to neighbouring areas. The new landscape would create medium sized spaces allowing for a variety of activities and uses.

The 1937 racing circuit would be partly re-routed and re-surfaced as a promenade and event route.

The Lodge and Paxton Suite buildings will be demolished and their foundations used to accommodate a skateboard park and adventure playground for older children and teenagers, providing physical challenges. The area is also intended for informal gathering and socialising. In this contoured area there will be suitable spaces for skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX riders. The location is close to the 5-11 year olds playground which could be themed around horticulture complementing the horticulture shows that would be expected to be staged on the nearby Italian Terrace and the London Green Chain walk which passes through close by.

The former Rosary mound near the station is currently almost unrecognisable. The masterplan proposes to return this feature enhancing the topography and planting in the form of a spiral to create a folly and viewpoint.

The areas adjacent to the Rosary have been identified as the site for the future Crystal palace Regional Sports Centre which would be an earth covered building.

Existing mature trees and remaining rhododendrons in outlying areas would be retained. Improved soil conditions would create a range of meadow habitats together with loose orchard areas planted with a variety of fruit trees.

A central pavilion at the top of the transitional landscape and next to the Paxton axis will provide a prominent place in the Park for people to meet friends and family or obtain assistance from Park Rangers, local police and park users. The intention is to make the human face of the Park more visible which would hopefully increase the feeling of security and make a significant improvement to the Park atmosphere. The building would contain a small meeting room, office, public WCs and first aid station. It would be open, inviting and capable of being closed with folding shutters, which when open provide shade.
